Buttock abscess

A buttock abscess is a localized skin infection in the buttock area. It often consists of localized erythema, warmth, and pain. The lesion may appear pustular with underlying fluctuance, surrounding induration, and tenderness. This is localized in nature and not a diffuse erythematous presentation as seen in other diaper-area infections. Depending on the location, imaging may be necessary to distinguish it from deeper infection. Treatment consists of incision and drainage; however antibiotics may be required, especially in the presence of systemic symptoms.
