Dacryoadenitis

Dacryoadenitis is inflammation of the lacrimal gland of the eye. It can be caused by viral or bacterial infections and may either be acute or chronic in nature. Symptoms of acute dacryoadenitis may include pain, erythema, swelling, and vision changes. Bacterial dacryoadenitis typically presents with more pain, erythema, and more commonly has systemic symptoms as compared to viral dacryoadenitis. Swelling of the lateral upper eyelid and surrounding area is a common presentation in children. Chronic dacryoadenitis typically has an insidious onset and is often associated with other chronic conditions. Acute bacterial dacryoadenitis is treated with antibiotics, oral for mild infections and parenteral for more severe presentations with systemic symptoms.
