Enterobius vermicularis, also known as pinworms, is an infection with intestinal parasites most often seen in children. The eggs are transmitted via the fecal-oral route, and they mature within the gastrointestinal tract. The adult female pinworms have nocturnal migration to the perianal area to lay eggs. This leads to intense pruritus. Scratching the area without proper hygiene can lead to further spread. The worms are small, white to beige in color and characteristically have a “thread-like” appearance. Diagnosis can occur by a “tape test,” in which a piece of clear tape is pressed to the perianal area and then observed for the presence of eggs. Treatment includes Mebendazole or Albendazole and it is recommended that household members also receive treatment.
