Omphalitis is an infection of the umbilical stump and surrounding soft tissues. It presents with erythema of the umbilical stump and surrounding tissues including the periumbilical area along with tracking redness along the midline. There may also be purulent discharge from the stump. Complications may include abdominal cellulitis, sepsis, or peritonitis. Unlike in umbilical granuloma, these neonates are sick and should be evaluated for sepsis including collection of blood and wound cultures. The patient will require hospital admission and parenteral antibiotic treatment.
