Paraphimosis occurs when the foreskin of the penis becomes stuck in a retracted position over the glans and cannot be reduced. The constricted ring of foreskin leads to impaired venous drainage leading to worsening edema of the glans and foreskin of the penis. Symptoms include severe pain, erythema, and swelling. Paraphimosis is a urologic emergency and needs to be reduced as soon as possible. Arterial blood supply is also at risk due to swelling and necrosis of the glans is possible if reduction is not prompt. A penile block may be required for reduction attempts. If unable to be reduced manually, a urologist will need to be emergently consulted.
