Preseptal cellulitis is typically caused by an upper respiratory infection or contiguous spread as the result of local trauma, hordeoleum, chalazion, or insect bite. Patients may have swelling and erythema of the eyelid which may extend to the periorbital skin, increased tearing, mild pain, and low-grade fever. Extraocular movements will be painless and visual acuity will be unchanged because the eye and orbit are not involved, unlike in orbital cellulitis. Preseptal cellulitis is most common in children and the common causative organisms include Staphylococcus species, Streptococcus species, or anaerobes. Treatment consists of oral antibiotics.
